Hell at its most central meaning is utter and complete separation from the presence of God. It is not the lake of fire. Hell will be thrown into the lake of fire at the final judgment (Rev 20:14). Hell was prepared for lucifer and the other angels who rebelled with him (Matt 25:41). It was not made for humanity, but if a person serves lucifer on earth they will join him in hell. Anyone whose name is not found in the book of life will also be thrown into the lake of fire (Rev 20:15). The rebellious angels are currently held there in chains of deepest darkness (2 Ptr 2:4). Even though hell is not the lake of fire there are tormenting flames (Luke 16:24). It is a place of multiple torments (Luke 16:24). Jesus describes it as a furnace of fire (Matt 13:42) and an everlasting fire (Matt 25:41). Hell is described as being in the heart of the earth (Matt 12:40, Eph 4:9). It is a place of deepest darkness (2 Ptr 2:17, Jude 13).
